As part of this programme, we are very proud to present the Technical Theatre Skills Workshop which is generously funded by The Criterion Theatre Trust and has been developed in collaboration with Coram Shakespeare Schools Foundation:

Technical Theatre Skills Workshops at The Criterion Theatre

As part of the Coram Tomorrow’s Achiever’s programme, Coram Shakespeare Schools Foundation (CSSF), in proud partnership with The Criterion Theatre in the West End, delivers a free, active full-day workshop giving young people in Year 9 and 10 a hands-on experience of the technical side of theatre.

Over the course of the day, the students work with members of the Criterion’s technical team and a group of professional actors and theatre makers to explore four key backstage elements of theatre production: directing, lighting, sound, and stagecraft.

This workshop provides an excellent introduction to technical theatre careers for students who are already curious about backstage roles, and for those with a keen interest in STEM who might not yet have considered applying their skills in the creative industries.

In this workshop participants:

  • Learn experientially from industry professionals about lighting, sound, stage management, and directing.
  • Get creative, designing a scene and taking it from page to stage.
  • Work collaboratively in small groups, each focusing on a specific technical theatre role.
  • Showcase their newly developed skills in a technical rehearsal and scratch performance in which they call the show and operate the technical cues.

Since piloting the programme in summer 2024, more than 250 young people have taken part in the workshop and we are excited to work with even more over the months to come.

Feedback from the workshops:

“I most enjoyed learning about the theatre's lighting rig and the lighting desk as it gave me a good understanding of what being a West End lighting technician is like.”
Workshop participant

“One student is a very committed performer and has never really considered any other role in theatre. She left the theatre with a new appreciation for technical roles and a new passion. She also knew it would help her in her approach to the GCSE written exam.”
Teacher

“I most enjoyed people listening to my ideas and actually creating a piece out of it. This was enjoyable as I was able to be creative and see it come to life.”
Workshop participant

“All students were positive about the experience and many have considered alternative roles within the theatre industry! This truly is down to the excellent organisation of the event.”
Teacher

100% of teachers answered that the workshop fully met their expectations and gave it the highest score for delivery.

A roundup of Coram Tomorrow’s Achievers from last year

Masterclasses and resources for curious young people

A child plays with a robot car, with its wires exposed. In 2024, Coram Tomorrow’s Achievers ran a series of three Masterclasses with tutor Marcelo Staricoff at the Coram Campus in London. Each Masterclass was designed to stretch and challenge the participants, enhancing their learning in a room full of like-minded peers in the areas of Philosophy, Maths and Science.

Our masterclasses are affordable for all and cover a wealth of different topics in ways which involve and challenge curious and ambitious young people. Led by expert tutors, the sessions cover topics including science, technology, maths, philosophy, virtual reality, literature and the arts. They are designed to engage, stretch and challenge curious young people.

Since Tomorrow’s Achievers launched in 1998, 20,000 children have benefitted from the workshops. Tomorrow's Achievers is part of Coram, the first children's charity, helping more than 1 million children, young people and families every year.

“The course helped me to understand that Maths can be exciting!”
