How Coram Shakespeare Schools Foundation changed this student's perception of Shakespeare
Blog by Albie - Youth Board Member
Here is a blog written by one of our fantastic Youth Board members, Albie. It details his experience so far, the highlights, attending the Youth Board summit, and future ambitions in this role.
Can you share your personal journey with CSSF and acting?
My first time performing on a professional stage was actually for CSSF at age 9, when I played Henry V. This year, I got a distinction with one of Henry V's great monologues in my Lamda Grade 5 exam. Following my experience with CSSF and starting Lamda, I decided to pursue my acting further and secured an agent. I then performed at the Regents Park Open Air Theatre for two consecutive summer seasons and last year gained a role in a film to be released in the US this month.
Why do you think Shakespeare is valuable for young people?
I believe that Shakespeare is valuable to the young generation as his timeless plays and sonnets teach us about human nature, society, and even history. CSSF makes the storytelling relatable and enjoyable.
How did you feel about joining the CSSF Youth Board?
I was really pleased to get onto the CSSF Youth Board. I am a huge fan of the great work that they do to enable children of all backgrounds to have the opportunity to perform on a professional stage and to learn Shakespeare in an enjoyable and fun way!
How did you approach your application to the Youth Board?
For my application to the Youth Board, I responded to the Hamlet quote they gave us through a song. I feel that music can make a big impact and can emotionally connect with people. I wrote the song on my guitar and the lyrics felt like a natural response to the quote. I wanted to repeat the important messages and used this as my chorus. I hope you enjoy it!

What has been the highlight of your Youth Board experience so far?
The workshop in the Sam Wannamaker Theatre at the Globe was my personal highlight as an actor. I have always wanted to tread the boards at the Globe, and having seen Henry V there a year ago, it felt very special. It is an iconic venue, and we discussed performing arts as a career with an in-house actor/director and looked at scripts.
How did you find the Youth Board Summit?
The Youth Board Summit was the first time that I met the other Board Members and the Executive team at CSSF. It was great to meet like-minded young people and the inspiring board that runs the organization. The Youth Board puts forward ideas and opinions to shape the plans for the year ahead, to make Coram relevant to young people today, to offer opportunities to develop skills and confidence, and as an educational tool.
Lastly, what are you looking forward to most in your role on the Youth Board?
I am really looking forward to putting forward new ideas for programming and workshops, helping with merchandise product concepts and launches, and using my performing arts and songwriting experience to inspire others to take up the opportunity to perform on stage and build their confidence for whatever they want to do in the future. I have seen first-hand how CSSF transforms lives and brings joy.
